Changing to monthly meetups

The independent scholars will no longer be meeting weekly during a weekday but monthly on Saturdays!

The Monthly Saturday Indy Scholars Meet-up will be the 2nd Saturday of the month at 19:00 CET, 18:00 BST, 13:00 EST, 12:00 CST.

Keeping in mind that many locations will be changing soon from Summer times to standard times.

Looking forward to seeing you this Saturday!

Thematic meeting: Websites

Tomorrow, 22 April 2021, we’re having our first thematic weekly meeting, and it’s about setting up a website about who you are as a scholar and/or a professional. Laura Vivanco and Marie Léger-St-Jean have experience to share, and Alison Newman wants to hear what everybody has to say about theirs!

West Coast: 8am-9am
East Coast: 11am-12pm
British Isles: 4-5pm
Central Europe: 5-6pm

Email us at indy.scholars.community_at_gmail.com for the Zoom meeting details and/or to join our Slack.

See you tomorrow!

Revised North American schedule for the weekly meet-up

For the next two weeks, North America is closer to Europe than ever: the former have switched to Daylight Saving Time and the latter will only do so in two weeks. We have therefore revised the North American times for our weekly Zoom meet-ups.

Join us if you’d like on Thursdays 18 and 25 March:

West Coast: 9am-10am
East Coast: 12pm-1pm
British Isles: 4-5pm
Central Europe: 5-6pm

Email us at indy.scholars.community_at_gmail.com for the Zoom meeting details and/or to join our Slack.

We will return to the previous schedule on Thursday 1st April (seriously!).

See you soon!

Weekly meet-ups still going strong

The trial period for our weekly Zoom meet-ups is up, and we definitely feel like it’s meeting part of our needs for a sense of community. Laura Vivanco has reenergized the community with her presence, great advice, and need to break out of the isolation despite her long experience as an independent scholar.

So join us if you’d like on Thursdays:

West Coast: 8am-9am
East Coast: 11am-12pm
British Isles: 4-5pm
Central Europe: 5-6pm

Email us at indy.scholars.community_at_gmail.com for the Zoom meeting details and/or to join our Slack.

See you next week!

Starting weekly Zoom meetups

Today, we met up on Zoom for the first time in 2021. Simon Rosenberg is enjoying a 4-week break from his teaching job to work on his scholarship, so he’ll lead weekly Zoom meetings for at least the next two weeks:

West Coast: 8am-9am
East Coast: 11am-12pm
British Isles: 4-5pm
Central Europe: 5-6pm

Email us at indy.scholars.community_at_gmail.com for the Zoom meeting details and/or to join our Slack.

See you next week!

Meeting new faces and imagining a podcast

We just had a great meeting with new faces from both sides of the Atlantic talking about their new lives outside of academia and their frustrations with their past academic lives.

Moving forward, podcaster and independent researcher Natalia Tolstopyat presented us with the idea of creating a podcast to introduce our community to the world and emphasize its nurturing nature by giving it a face (or rather a voice). Everyone was very enthusiastic.

She very quickly laid out a plan that goes something like this:

Episode length: 8 – 15 minutes

An approximate plan for the first introductory episodes:

  • What are independent scholars and how our community was founded
  • “Being outside the institutional thinking”: life before, while, after academia
  • Opportunities outside of academia

Other topics we brainstormed:

  • the therapeutic effect of our community;
  • affiliate research positions and other cool things they don’t tell us about in academia;
  • how academia can help you in freelance tasks;
  • identity crisis and how community and networking can help find the right people to talk to;
  • places for funding;
  • going public with your decision to leave academia.

If you’re interested in participating in the community and in the podcast, email us at indy.scholars.community_at_gmail.com.
